One important clarification guys. Upon re-reading Mark's post, I realize there are two parts to this:
1) TOPICS FOR OBJECTS: The screen shot Mark posted shows the Community Management Console being used to add
#Topics For Objectsto individual knowledge articles. These are stored in the TopicAssignment object, which IS available from SObject. A few key things to remember:
- These are Community-scoped. If you use Workbench to query TopicAssignment, you will see the NetworkId field. The topics you assign to articles in the Community Management Console will contain the ID of the Network (community) you are in at the time. This is important.
- The EntityId field contains the Salesforce ID of the article (e.g. FAQ_kav) you are tagging. When used with other objects, that field contains the ID of the records or FeedItem the topic was tagged to.
- TopicId contains the Salesforce ID of the topic you are tagging to that record.
Tagging a knowledge article with a topic (in the current community) makes it appear on the Topic Detail page under the Articles tab/component.
2) MANAGED TOPICS: As described above, you can set individual topics to be in the navigation and/or featured. This is the process I described above, and is manageable through the REST API of Chatter Connect.

Hi all! I am researching utilizing new means of allowing my support team to record the # of contacts that reach out for assistance due to a product issue / bug / etc. in a way that is more flexible than case statuses, as at this point we would be adding a bit too many. Topics seems like a great solution for this. I found this site that notes we can create custom reports but I am hesitant to say this functionality is available due to the difficulties everyone else seems to be experiencing when attempting to report on topics and the related objects. Can anyone confirm the instructions here work and/or that you can report on topics and objects together in a custom report?

23. Feb. 2024, 20:23 Hi Ines!
No worries. I found the solution here. The permissions for Topics (Tag Names) lies within System Permissions. To report on Topics, I needed to find the Object Permission for TagNames (not Topics) which is where the confusion was. Thanks for being willing to help though! :)
Hi all,
We're currently looking into Topics as a tool to report on various different records that relate to the same topic/category. While on paper, topics looks like a great option, but the reporting is underwhelming? I've created a topics assignment report, and its great we can pull the record IDs for the objects, but we can't do anything else like a cross filter or pull additional fields/details from those records (can't even check the object type). The related list gives a good view, but I want this to be a reporting option?
Is there any way to do this? Maybe via a Visualforce page/table maybe? Where we could search for the topic and then it pulls all related records so we can report or export?
Maybe there's another way as mentioned above, to report on various records that sit in the same category - anyway, if anyone has been succesful with it, let me know!

4. Dez. 2024, 07:30 I am also searching for a solution to get a report on topics and cases. e.g., Topic X is used on XXXX cases (case ID etc). I've tried to build a custom report type but could not find a solution.
Good day trailblazers!
I've an object with a type field and a due date. The due date has a formula:
IF(OR("API_name"="X", "API_name"="Y", "API_name"="Z"),Today()+30,Today()+7)
When I create a new record, the API_name field is empty, and doesn't match the X, Y an Z value. It therefor defaults to a due date of Today()+7. But here's my issue, when I manually select value X, Y or Z in the API_name field, the Due date field is not being updated according to its formula.
Any ideas how I can manage this?

15. Feb. 2024, 09:32 Are you trying to create a "normal" date field and is this in the default formula? If so, you cannot use a field on the record:
https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=000392562&type=1
Q: I am trying to reference a field on the record in the formula for the default value of a field, but it is not available
A: Default values are only available on creation of a record. At that point, no field has any value until the record is saved, hence why you cannot reference any field on the record itself.
You could use a record-triggered flow to populate the field, but this would only show after saving, or you could use a Quick Action and add a predefined value for this specific field
What you need to do is to create a formual field that will return a date, or as stated above, a record triggered flow to update the date field
Hi guys, I'm working with the Napili template in my sandbox at the minute and when I select the Article Detail page to edit, in Community Builder, I get the message "The Article Detail page relies on your Salesforce data and because you don’t yet have any relevant content, the page can't be displayed. Add some appropriate content and try again." I'm very likely missing something obvious but don't know what. I have Knowledge enabled in the sandbox and when I enter a relevant search it finds my test articles, so I know they're being seen! Any help and suggestions gratefully received :)
28. Apr. 2016, 13:57 Thank you @Nick Emmett @Kara Allen - this thread landed in my inbox and solved my first issue of the day! Couldn't ask for better timing!
We're entering week 3 of our Chatter-only (Sales Cloud, Services Cloud and Community Cloud to follow) launch to over 4.500 global employees, and here are some tips I came up with during the initial explosion of activity:
How to Improve Your Chatter Experience! (Please share this post!)
Whew! Chatter has exploded like the Big Bang and there’s a ton of pure energy and noise in the system as people fly around trying to figure out how do I adapt to this new environment? Some of you are feeling overwhelmed, so here are some tips to tailor your Chatter experience to reduce the “noise” and truly realize Chatter benefits like increased productivity, better communication, and better collaboration.
Here’s how …
Limit what you follow – Chatter users can follow People, Groups, Topics and Files. The more you follow of each, the more you’ll see in your Chatter feed. Let’s look at each category to see how you can better manage your Chatter experience:
People
We have over 4,500 employees on Chatter. The more you follow, the more activity you’ll see in your activity feed, and if you follow too many people, you could reduce your general Chatter feed to a meaningless distraction.
Consider:
- Who are you following?
- Take a look at the people you follow and if appropriate, delete those that are not really important to your day to day role and responsibilities.
- If someone follows you and they’re not really part of your day-to-day, don’t feel pressured to follow them back.
Groups
Groups are rapidly proliferating and causing confusion among some users. We are currently assessing all groups to identify where we can consolidate and simplify.
Consider:
- Before creating a group, do a few searches using key words related to the group you’re considering, and ask those you work with whether they know of such a group. You may find the group already exists.
- Look at all the groups you are following and if appropriate, delete those that are not really important to your day to day role and responsibilities. If there’s a particular topic you’re interested in within a group, you’re better off following that #topic (see topics below).
- If after searching for like-groups and considering the use of#topics to label your posts, you still believe you need a group, it should be public in order to foster collaboration across Kronos.
- Private groups should be limited to the following 2 cases:
- The private group consists of staff and a leader - in essence a virtual extension of a staff meeting
- The group content contains confidential information
Please remember Chatter's primary function is to increase collaboration, so if you must create a group, make it public unless one of the conditions above is met.
Files
Chatter users can upload, share, download, and comment on pretty much any file type like XLS, PPT, DOC, WAV, PNG, HTML, PDF, etc. Users can “follow” files so that if the file is updated, the user will be notified in their feed. For example, if a user relies on a particular Healthcare presentation, by following it, they’ll always know when a new version is available.
Consider:
- Only follow files critical to your job.
Chatter Topics let you label or categorize your posts with a common topic by using the hashtag sign (#) before the topic - like #YourTopicHere. By using hashtags to add topics to your posts, you make them easy to find by users searching for the topic, and also allow users to follow the topic so in the future they’ll see any post that includes the hashtag topic in their feed. When users search for or follow a #topic, they’ll see all posts categorized with the topic even if it’s from a public group they don’t follow! Following topics reduces the noise you may get in your feed by following a whole group.
Consider:
- Click on Topics in the left navigation bar of Chatter and explore them by scrolling or searching. Follow those that are important to your day to day role and responsibilities.
- Make sure you categorize your posts with Topics! This will allow people to find and receive your post on say, "YourFavoriteProduct" by following the topic #YourFavoriteProduct.
Thank you.

30. März 2016, 18:13 Yes, a broadcast group for these types of newsletters sounds like a good idea. There is a way to programmatically ensure that all members in the group have their email digests set to weekly (or daily or every post) as well.
7. Sept. 2014, 15:40 Great post! I believe @Stephen Hsu has been working on something like this as well, and he may be interested.
7. Sept. 2014, 15:38 Great idea. Thanks for sharing! @Stephen Hsu - Here's something we should consider. You can probably accomplish it today via a custom list view button, but I'd love to see it become standard functionality. Alternately, mass assigning topics from a report (just as we do with adding Leads & Contacts to campaigns) would be incredibly useful.
Hi all, looking for some best practices on Managing Campaign Members. We are trying to implement an scalable process for allowing our sales reps to mass add their own Leads and Contacts to a Campaign in the easiest way possible. Here are some experiment I've done and the roadblocks I have hit:
1. Users can go into individual Lead/Contact records and hit the "Add to Campaign" button on the Campaign History related list, but that does not meet the requirement of mass/bulk campaign membership addition.
2. This help doc indicates that, in order to mass add Leads/Contacts from a List View, the user must be marked as a Marketing User and have Edit rights on Campaigns. I am not comfortable extending those permissions to my sales reps (
https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=campaigns_listwizard.htm&language=en_US).
3. There's always the multi-select picklist option from which we can build reports or list views, but that does not meet the requirement of scalability...I don't want admins constantly adding picklist values just to get a campaign membership report/list together.
4. I was super excited by the addition of Topics for Objects, thinking that this would solve all of the problems. It's easily scalable, you can create List Views from Topics, and then we can use the Existing List Views, based off of topic criteria, to mass add campaign members. All the sales person has to do is assign a Contact the correct Topic. However, this simply does not work. I opened a case this morning with Salesforce on this. If you try to use a List View based off of topic criteria, your filter value auto-fills to "undefined." If you manually try to specify the filter to "Topics INCLUDES Your Topic," the criteria is simply disregarded.
Anyone have any other ideas here? I'd really like to avoid field and picklist value additions.
#Marketing #Campaigns #Topics for Objects #Campaign Members4. Juli 2014, 17:30 We're small (but might) and we have multi-pick lists for various things like different newsletters, different interests, external referral inquiries, etc for our contacts (that represent volunteers, followers, donors, or simply leads). We have reports that run every few days highlighting contacts who have various selections but do not have corresponding campaign memberships. that requires pushing the add to campaign button, of course. And we started using a tool (which was free at the time) called CampaignFlow (we were going to write a headless flow for this but now we don't have to) that puts people into campaigns based on criteria automatically. Our solution isn't as scalable as you like and requires new setup for new campaigns, but by sharing, maybe someone will tell me I could do it better than this or it will help you in some way.
