Do you backup your MetaData? I've been doing it for years but now there's a much easier way!

If you do regular data backups, you may say... I don't need to do metadata backups, right?. NOT TRUE! Data backups don't backup metadata. Never considered it? This blog is the jist (really the whole thing) of the most simple way I know to do it.

Do you backup your MetaData? I've been doing it for years but now there's a much easier way! If you do regular data backups, you may say... I don't need to do metadata backups, right?.

This way to do metadata backup that isn't a distraction and actually teaches you a core skill and gives you a core tool that I bet you'll be using for other things within a year. (hint hint... dev ops aren't just for developers anymore)

Do you use sandboxes for backup? Me too... until Salesforce broke them for this purpose...

For years, I’ve had the strategy of backing up Metadata once a quarter to a sandbox that I never touch. But now Salesforce deletes them after 6 months so I can’t keep a year. This seems unacceptable as a metadata backup. I’ve tried to log into them but to be honest, it's very hard to log into an old sandbox when your password keeps changing. And with all the MFA and focus on security, it's just about impossible to get into a sandbox that isn't recently refreshed. Refreshing it defeats the purpose of the metadata backup in the sandbox. I’ve tried to make it my junior intern's job, but they can’t do that unless they were in the org when it was created. So basically the sandbox as backup has failed for us.

I've known I could do backup using all the cool DX stuff from the developer world for a few years now, but I've watched and waited for a simple way to do it that wasn't a distraction and was simple enough I though every admin could do it. We... it's here now!

And yes... I've tried each of the lower cost backup solutions suitable for small nonprofits... none made me very "happy" about backup. Each each feels like a distraction. Few keep the data as archive. (The only time I actually needed my data backup so far was when I discovered a serious user error 6 months later that corrupted our data set... the archived saved my bacon!).  Only recently do any of the backups address metadata. So I'm still downloading my weekly data backups zips for that purpose.

Enjoy!

Hi, currently I can see CodeBuilder is running on version 1.83. Will the version be upgraded after some time or not? Can we choose to upgrade its version manually?

    Hi @Wilson Liu ,

Upgrade to the Latest Code Builder Version

In most cases, you don’t have to do anything to upgrade to the latest version of the Code Builder. When we release a new package version, we update your org automatically.

However, sometimes the push upgrade doesn’t work. If you don’t have the latest version, we recommend that you manually install the package through the Code Builder Setup page. If a newer version doesn’t exist, the package installer informs you that you already have the latest version.

Hi there,

Just wanted to clarify the expectations with Code Builder. Is it expected that we always launch it from a production org and then use it to sign into any sandboxes or dev orgs in which we want to develop? As I see it is available in the Setup menu of Prod orgs but not sandboxes.

Thanks for tuning in @Benjamin Holvey!  For those that don't listen to the broadcast, I'll add a bit more context here: We won't be enforcing a time limit for an individual user.  Code Builder access is capped based on the number of Code Builder users included in the edition.

Save your work TODAY!  Code Builder beta ends tomorrow as we get ready for GA in just a few weeks.  Be sure to save all work from your beta environment today.  After that, we'll delete the beta environments ahead of GA. #Code Builder

This is your last month to try out the beta of Code Builder!  At the beginning of October, we'll be winding down beta and removing all Code Builder beta environments to make way for GA!  Don't forget to save your work somewhere permanent.  Check out Code Builder this month and post your feedback or questions here.  #Code Builder

Hi @William Miller - Welcome to Salesforce dev and thank you for trying out Code Builder.  I'd love to hear your feedback on how it was to get started as someone new to coding.  Feel free to share here or drop me a direct message.

Where are you looking to store your work?  In another org?  In source control?  Or as local files on your device?

If you're storing them in another org, you can connect to that org from Code Builder and run a deploy command.  Here's a link to documentation on connecting an org and example steps to deploy different objects are listed in sections below.

If you want to use source control, git is baked into the editor.  You can see information from Microsoft on getting started with git here

Another option is to save your workspace as a local file.  You can do that by clicking the icon in the top left of Code Builder (three horizontal lines) --> File --> Save Workspace As.  In the prompt that comes up, there's a button labeled 'Show local'.  If you click that, you can see your local file system and save it there.  (assuming you have the permissions on your machine)
